A friend who was having a rough day called me. She was tense and on the edge of a blow up. What do you do in that situation? Do you fan the flames by saying, “That’s crazy, Girl! You shouldn’t put up with that!” Or do you calm her with empathy and soft suggestions?

Here are some tips for helping out a frustrated person.

  1. Let the person rant for a little while (not too long) to abate their anger. They may run out of steam and might come up with their own answers to their dilemma.
  2. Speak calmly. Talk to them in an even, peaceful tone so you don’t escalate their excitement.
  3. Offer to help. Everyone gets overwhelmed and needs help from time to time. Come to their aid, if you can.

Keep in mind that these tips are not for people who complain every day. (That’s a whole different blog post!) This is for the friend who’s had the occasional meltdown.

Use these tips to help a friend in need. You’ll be glad you did!
